Francesco Stephen Castelluccio, better known as Frankie Valli, is an American singer. He is known for his unusually powerful head voice. Some of his number one hit songs include Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, Ran Doll, and December 1963 (Oh, What a Night). His solo song, You're Ready Now, in 1966, was one of his popular song which became a hit in the UK and was a hit number eleven on the British pop charts in the year 1970. Apart from singing, he is an actor and has appeared in TV drama The Sopranos, TV movie Witness to the Mob, Miami Vice and so on.
Early Life of Frankie Valli
Frankie Valli was born on 3rd May 1934 in the city of Newark, New Jersey, U.S. He is the elder son of Anthony Castelluccio, a barber and display designer for Lionel model trains and Mary Rinaldo, a homemaker, and beer company employee.
His mother took him to meet singer Frank Sinatra at the Paramount Theater in New York City which inspired him to be a singer at the age of seven. His favorite singer was Jean Valli and it where he obtained his last name, Valli.
Frankie Valli's Career
Frankie Valli began his singing career since 1950’s along with Nickie DeVito, Tommy Sevitio, and Nick Maxioci. He was offered a guest spot by a group in their performance. Later, in 1952, he along with his team become part of the house band at the Strand in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
After working a long time for the band, he and Tommy DeVito left the house band and formed a new band, The Variatones with Hank Majewski, Frank Cattone, and Billy Thompson. The band group impressed New York record man Peter Paul. One of their hit songs was You’re the Apple of My Eye, written by Otis Blackwell, in 1956. The band was renamed The 4 Seasons after the group auditioned in a big suburban bowling alley in 1960.
He succeeded as a solo artist with the release, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, which reached number two on the charts and was recorded by many other artists as well.
From 1970-1990, he recorded solo songs which include My Eyes Adored You, Swearin’ to God, A Day in the Life and made a theme song for the movie version of the stage play Grease, a song which was written by Barry Gibb and Bee Gees.
Besides performing on the stage, Valli and The Four Seasons hit recordings was featured in a biographical narrative of each member of The Four Season, Tommy DeVito, Frankie Valli, Nick Massi and Bob Gaudio. Talking about Frankie’s personal life, it is quite interesting in comparison to others. He has been married three times. Firstly, he married Mary, in 1954, and had two daughters. After living 13 years together, the husband-wife divorced in 1971.
After three years, he married Mary Ann Hannigan on 29th June 1974. Unfortunately, his second marriage also ended in a divorce on 25th February 1982.
Finally, he married Randy Clohessy on 7th July 1984. The husband and wife had three sons together. This relationship also ended in 2004.
In 1980, he lost his two daughters: one step-daughter, Celia, who was killed when she fell off a fire escape and after six months, his youngest daughter, Francine, died because of a drug overdose.
