Sharon Stone and Halle Berry shared some screen time together in the 2004 film Catwoman. Like Berry, Stone was also disappointed with some of the narrative decisions made in the film. In particular, Stone once remarked how it might have been a missed opportunity to not have them kiss in the movie. An opportunity she blamed a missing source for squandering.

Why Halle Berry once found taking a role that was meant for Sharon Stone ‘significant’

Sharon Stone played a huge part in Halle Berry getting one of her most well-known roles. The Oscar-winner once featured in the 1994 movie The Flinstones, alongside actors like John Goodman and Rosie O’ Donnel. But originally, the part that Berry played belonged to Sharon Stone. However, scheduling problems forced the Basic Instinct star to part ways with the role. However, another actor soon came to Stone’s mind who she thought could fill the role.

“They had asked me to play this part in The Flintstones movie, Sharon Stonerock, but I had to go and do another movie,” Stone told Comics Continuum. “But I said, ‘There’s this woman who’s new, this Halle Berry gal, and she would be good for that. If someone’s going to play me, essentially, how about her? She’s so cool and beautiful and had something in there.’”

In an interview with The New York Times, Berry would later remark why nabbing this role away from Stone was so important.

“I convinced him that in this day and age, Bedrock should be integrated, and he seemed to get it,” Berry said. “A few days later, they offered me the part. It was significant for me because it was the first time I got a part that was written for a white woman.”

Why Sharon Stone was disappointed she couldn’t kiss Halle Berry in ‘Catwoman’

Stone wasn’t sure if Catwoman was the movie for her when she first got the script.

“I thought, ‘Well, I don’t know. Do I want to do this?’ I mean, I had been out of the business for a while, and I didn’t even know if I still wanted to be an actress. I didn’t know what I wanted to do,” she said.

But she was later convinced to do the role because she was going to play a villain, which Stone enjoyed. Apart from that, however, Catwoman gave Stone the opportunity to work with longtime friend Halle Berry.

“So, I saw this part and I thought that this was sort of like what I had in mind. But I was glad that a woman, this Oscar-winning, powerful actress, wanted me to work opposite her. I thought that was really the thing,” Stone shared. “That I could work opposite a woman, which I’m not used to doing and that that would be interesting to me.”

Stone also once revealed a desire to take things a bit further with Halle Berry while filming. According to Irish Examiner, Stone felt the two should’ve been intimate in the movie.

“Halle’s so beautiful and I wanted to kiss her. I said, ‘How can you have us in the movie and not have us kiss? That’s such a waste,” Stone said in the resurfaced interview.

She blamed the political climate at the time for why this kiss didn’t happen.

“That’s what you get for having George Bush as president,” she said.

How ‘Catwoman’ changed Halle Berry’s life

Halle Berry and Catwoman may have gotten a lot of flack, but Berry once revealed she was grateful for the film. Starring in the film taught her several valuable lessons in life.

“Everybody around me said, ‘Girl, don’t do it. It’s going to be the death of you. It’s going to end your career.’ But guess what I did? I followed my intuition and I did a movie called Catwoman and it bombed miserably,” Berry told Glamour. “While it failed for most people, it wasn’t a failure for me because I met so many interesting people that I wouldn’t have met otherwise, I learned two forms of martial arts and I learned what not to do.”

Berry also credited the film for helping her make “a s***-load of money that changed my life.”
